The White Lie sold to Simon & 06/22/2010
I'm thrilled to announce that my novel The White Lie, which I've been working on for four years, has been sold to Simon & Schuster's Gallery. The White Lie started out as a historical novel, the story of an Irish nanny whose young charge dies in the 1916 polio epidemic, and has morphed into a three-time-period tale of pregnancy, motherhood, and adoption. The book will be out (I hope) next fall, and I'm beginning work on another historical novel I've had on the back burner for a few years now. So excited!

THE DAILY BEAST MACHA QUIZ 11/02/2008
I have a new piece in today's issue of The Daily Beast, Tina Brown's cool new web site. It's a kind of quiz, asking How Macha Are You?. It's based on an idea I had rattling around in my lil old female brain for quite a while, and it made me laugh out loud as I was writing it (always a good sign, when you're writing humor).

SLIGHTLY BETTER WOMAN 02/13/2008
My new nonfiction book 1000 WAYS TO BE A SLIGHTLY BETTER WOMAN , coming out in April from Stewart, Tabori & Chang, has been chosen by the independent booksellers association Booksense as a Notable Book. This is quite an honor and I'm thrilled. I'm lucky enough to live in a town with not one but two independent bookstores, Watchung Booksellers and Montclair Book Center, and encourage you to look for my new book at a Booksense store near you or go here. Feminist Review calls it: "An enjoyable read with practical and to the point advice that at times made me smile and nod my head in agreement, 1,000 Ways To Be A Slightly Better Woman would make a great gift for yourself or for any woman in your life."

EVERY WOMAN LIST QUILTED! 01/19/2008
This is one of the coolest things that's happened to me in a long time: Celeste Janey, a Boston area artist who makes museum-quality quilts, wants to create one around my infamous Glamour List, "What Every Woman Should Have and Should Know." And after turning down all past requests to reproduce or license the list, Glamour -- which owns the copyright -- has said yes! Thanks, editor Cindi Leive and executive editor Susan Goodall. I love Celeste Janey's work and I'm thrilled and honored that she's chosen my work to transform into one of her gorgeous quilts.

BRILLIANT BOOK OF BABY NAMES 08/01/2007
The British version of THE BABY NAME BIBLE, titled THE BRILLIANT BOOK OF BABY NAMES, will be out next week from HarperCollins. It's got a different cover (baby with outrageous boa) and Anglicized spellings, but otherwise much of the information is the same. But this kind of huge comprehensive baby-naming book is something new for the Brits.

The British edition, published by Penguin in spring 2005, will come out under its original title, Down There. The Man I Should Have Married has most recently been sold to Gramedia in Indonesia.
